My Musical Horizons...

... need some expanding.

So, I'm going to ask for your help.

Please leave a comment and let me know five (or more if you want to) musical recommendations you would make. They can be songs, groups, or artists.

Keep the following in mind.

1) If the lyrics include big-time swears, let me know in advance so I can try to track down an edited version.
2) I am not going to tell you what kind of music I listen to normally, because I don't want you to be influenced by what you think I would like. I want to know what you listen to.
3) If you recommend an artist, I will listen to at least three of their songs to get a feel and go from there.
4) If you recommend a song, I will listen to that song and then look up the artist and listen to three more. :)
5) I'll let you know what new favorites I discover.

I would also love if it you tell other people to come to my post and comment. The more recommendations, the better!

Hopefully you will also learn about more artists, songs, and genres that interest you through this group effort.

I'm so out of touch with music right now. But here are some that I can listen to over and over:
Beth Orton
Wilco
Josh Rouse
Travis
Pink Martini (specifically Sympathique album)

Wilco has a little language as I recall.

For newer stuff I've also recently enjoyed Ingrid Michaelson, Jem and Feist.

Seriously? I thought I might be able to help you until I saw Jennifer's comment. I have never heard of anyone on her list. My all time favorites are Celine and Jewel. I'm sure you already know all of their stuff, though. I like Rihanna lately, and what I've heard from Taylor Swift, I like. I also enjoy some of Avril Lavigne, Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, and The Wreckers. I guess I am not the right person to ask...(not that you asked me specifically). I like country music more than I thought. :)

Sorry, but I plan to list way more than five. I will put them in different categories:

Christmas: Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong and Noel by Josh Groban

Soundtracks: Aida (original cast,) Hairspray (newer version,) Love Actually, 50 first dates (for an island flavor,) Jane Eyre (broadway cast,) Pride and Prejudice (new version,) and August Rush.

Other: Brad Paisley (one of the only country people I really like,) any of Josh Groban cds, Evanescence (has language but is good for angry or hurt days,) The Visit by Loreena McKennitt, Little Voice by Sara Bareilles, and Rockberry by Duffy.

I love Lenka! And Regina Spektor (obviously, but you already know it) and I think you should listen to Kay Starr. I like her "I've got my love to keep me warm" So what if I first heard it at work. That's where I first heard Imogene Heap too.

I have discovered in the last two or three years that I love country music. Right now, one of my favorite songs is Love Story by Taylor Swift. I also like Remember When by Alan Jackson and Ben says to tell you to listen to I'm Still a Guy by Brad Paisley. I really like Brad Paisley so I mentioned him even though Jess already did. Also, someone already mentioned Dashboard Confessional. Listen to So Impossible and Hands Down because I really like those ones. :) One more that I like is The Good Stuff by Kenny Chesney. Good luck! Let us know what you ended up liking.

Sarah my dear, I love music. Literally I am obsessed, you remember in the UVSC office when I would just listen to it, well I still do that and quite frankly have many songs to add to the list that you need to become familiar with.

I love snow patrol, they just make me smile. Especially, chocolate, run, Signal warning, chasing cars,
Open your eyes, seriously they are all good songs!

Ben folds is another music genius I think, not Ben folds five, just ben, lately I've been listening to him a lot. I love the album Rockin' the suburbs, it's a keeper for sure! I think I have 2 or 3!

I also really like Jack's mannequin latest album, he was the lead singer for something corporate if you remember them from a while ago.

I also enjoy Rocky Vololato, white daisy passing is my favorite by him.

Lately I've been into Tori Amos, listening a lot to her lyrics especially in happy phantom, winter and crucify. Tori may have a little language...

Joe Purdy, The City, this song reminds me of NYC a city I love!

The list continues...

Juno soundtrack, especially Anyone but you, it just makes me smile.

I do enough Heather Nova's, Heart and Shoulder, Like Lovers do & London Rain

Ryan Adams - come pick me up, there is quite a bit of language, but I seriously love this song, he does a good cover of Oasis wonderwall. You'll love the harmonica!

I will leave you with these artists and songs that I love, I hope you enjoy them too!
